kit e espiritualidadeInternational toolkit adapted to Brazilian reality by Child's Pastoral

This August, Child's Pastoral is holding an international meeting to discuss strategies for eradicating child poverty and preventing violence against children. The event will take place on August 24 at 2pm at the Museum of Life in Curitiba, Paraná.

Two guests with international experience in this area will be participating. They are:

Maria Lucia Uribe Torres - Executive Director of Arigatou International in Geneva, Switzerland.
She leads the strategic direction of the Ethical Education for Children Initiative as an international center of knowledge and action with partners in more than 30 countries.

Fred Nyabera - Director of End Child Poverty, Arigatou International in Nairobi, Kenya.
A social scientist and theologian, he works on improving the well-being of communities in East Africa, supporting responsible governance and promoting peace and security for development, especially with regard to vulnerable groups.

Innovative child protection initiative

During the meeting, the toolkit “Nurturing Children's Spiritual Development in the Early Years”, which was launched by Arigatou International at the Vatican in November 2022 as a result of The International Consortium on Nurturing Values and Spirituality in Early Childhood for the Prevention of Violence, will be discussed.

The Child's Pastoral is participating in the process of developing this material in Brazil, together with organizations in Mexico, India and Pakistan. The application of the material is being evaluated by the University of Notre Dame in the United States.

The E-spirituality toolkit in Brazil

In Brazil, the toolkit has been given the name E-spirituality and has been adapted into Portuguese for the Child's Pastoral app and website. The kit has the format of educational material and provides guidance on spirituality, interactions and activities that families can develop with children.

The pilot project in Brazil

In addition to the educational material adapted for the app and website, the project is being applied to around 40 volunteer families in the cities of Cuiabá (MT), Florianópolis (SC), Campo Largo and Guaratuba (PR).

The project facilitators share the contents of the kit with the families, create dynamics, provide guidance on children's rights and talk about spirituality. “It's a way of showing that families are not alone in caring for children,” explains Maria das Graças Gervásio, coordinator of International Child's Pastoral.

The evaluation of the pilot project is due to end in 2024. “We have already noticed a change in the behavior of the participating families. They are spending more time with the children. In addition, they realize that spirituality goes far beyond religion,” says Graça.
