ORS (Oral Rehydration Solutions)

Homemade ORS is made with water, salt, and sugar. To avoid mistakes in quantities, the Pastoral Care for Children uses a measuring spoon to prepare homemade ORS. It should be offered to prevent dehydration or the initial symptoms of dehydration. Homemade ORS does not cure diarrhea, it just replaces the liquid lost in the feces and vomiting.

To prepare the homemade ORS you need:

  • a glass with 200 ml of water;
  • a measuring spoon;
  • salt and sugar.

After washing your hands well, fill a glass with clean, boiled, or filtered water (200 ml). With a measuring spoon, place a small, level measure of salt and two large, level measures of sugar into this glass, stirring well until the salt and sugar dissolve.

In addition to teaching parents how to make homemade ORS, it is also necessary to advise them to always offer the ORS in small amounts to the child with diarrhea, observing signs of improvement.

The ORS should be offered with a spoon or in a cup, and the amount made should be taken within 24 hours. If it is necessary to drink ORS for more days, a new recipe must be prepared each day.

Some children do not want to take the ORS. It is necessary to explain to the mother to insist without forcing her. She can talk to the child, saying that the ORS will do them good and they will get well soon, and that, as she loves them so much, she doesn't want to see them sick.

Babies under six months who only breastfeed should not take homemade ORS in cases of diarrhea. The mother should breastfeed more often, insisting on breastfeeding. Babies under six months who are breastfed but also receive other liquids or foods, and those who are not breastfed, can receive homemade ORS in case of diarrhea.

In addition to taking the ORS, the child should continue to eat their normal diet. When the child continues to eat, they heal faster from diarrhea, do not lose weight, and have fewer complications.

  • During this diarrhea, which happened in the last two weeks, did the child drink the ORS?

If the answer is no, you will have the following question:

  • Does the mother have a measuring spoon?

If the answer is no, you will have the following question:

Leader, do you have a measuring spoon, to give to the mother or guardian?

If the answer is no, it will generate a notification to the parish coordination to provide the leader with a measurement spoon.
