The End of Puerperium

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that the woman have at least 3 appointments at the health service after delivery, as follows:

  • on the 3rd day after the delivery;
  • between 7 and 14 days after the delivery;
  • six weeks after the delivery.

It is good that the partner goes along to these appointments, so they can receive guidelines on the interval between one pregnancy and another.

The postpartum period lasts forty days. When the woman is well, the couple can have sex again soon after this period.

The WHO also recommends that women take an iron supplement daily until the third month postpartum. The same recommendation should be followed if the woman has a miscarriage during pregnancy.

Check the topic "Postpartum" for more information about iron supplementation in your country.
