Some babies can be born weighing less than two and a half kilograms (2,500g). Many of them require special care and need to stay in the hospital longer to receive it.
Ideally, the mother could stay with her baby during this phase. If not, she and her father should visit him as often as possible.
In these opportunities, it is important to breastfeed the baby and let the baby's body be close to the mother's body so that they stay warm and feel as if they were still inside the womb, receiving the stimulus on the skin and feeling the mother's smell and movements. The father can also keep the baby close to his body to reinforce the bond between the two and help the mother.
Underweight babies should breastfeed more times a day and at night as well. If you sleep for more than three hours straight, you should be gently woken up to feed. So the baby gains weight faster.
