How do we feel when listening to stories? What did they awaken in us? What do they awaken in children?
How important it is in the formation of a child to hear many stories! Listening to stories is a magical, enchanting moment, it is also an incentive for children to learn to read. Stories told by the mother, the father, the grandparents, at night on the edge of the bed, on a rainy day, under a tree, in a nice hammock. Stories told to several children in a circle. Fairy tales, Bible passages, made-up stories, book stories, community cases. How many ways to tell or read stories to children to see them laugh, ask, be scared and calm, dramatize, repeat, invent...
To hear and tell stories is to stimulate the imagination, it is to have curiosity answered in relation to so many questions, it is to discover other places, other times. By listening to stories, children participate in the characters' problems and difficulties and see that they may or may not be solved. They can feel important emotions such as sadness, anger, joy, fear, insecurity and many others, and so they get to know each other better, learning to deal with limits, finding ideas, solutions to problems, seeing how to overcome challenges.
Listening and reading stories is also developing children's critical spirit, allowing them to think, doubt, ask, criticize what has been read or told, have their own ideas, form their own opinions.
A good story should enchant, hold attention, talk about interesting things and cases that are related to children's lives and level of understanding and also bring news to arouse curiosity, encourage imagination. We should not be concerned about telling stories with the aim of imparting knowledge or giving moral lessons. We want children to hear stories, see books for the pleasure it brings them, so that they can enjoy reading.
As we live in a society in which people communicate a lot through written things, children need to be in contact with letters and numbers from an early age to be interested and want to learn to read. Therefore, we encourage children to obtain books. Although we can tell stories without books, they are important, as they stimulate a taste for reading and also an interest in drawings and illustrations.
