Why is this activity important?

A meditation time, or quiet time, allows children to disconnect from the day and connect and be with themselves. It can help them clear their minds to better process what happened and what they learned that day. It grounds them in the present moment and provides them with the space to develop their self-awareness, exploring their own thoughts, how they are feeling, and to help them deal with stressful or upsetting situations.

How to make:

FOR AGES 3-5 AND 5-8 YEARS:

1. Before inviting children to a moment of meditation, be aware of the environment. Are you in a quiet, distraction-free area? Is the area warm and inviting? Prepare the area with a plush or pillow, close the curtains and make sure no one interrupts. Invite your child to lie down or sit with you and explain that you will have a relaxing time together.

2. Lie down or sit in a comfortable position. Encourage your child to close their eyes, you can close yours to show them. Play calm and peaceful music gently. Try to choose a song that lasts 7-10 minutes so you don't have to change the song or have an interruption.

3. Enjoy the time together as long as your child wants to be there. This can be 5 minutes; could be 20 minutes. Take this time of meditation as a break from the day and a way to recharge before starting your next activity or work.

4. Ask your child how they felt, if they enjoyed the quiet time together, or if they have a favorite toy they would like to cuddle next time.

Have in mind

This activity works best when kids are playing and running, and ready to take a break. It is important that you model this moment of meditation and use it as a time to be together in the calm, present moment. Some young children may fall asleep, other older children may find it difficult and not want to close their eyes, but that's ok, encourage tranquility

Tips on how to do this activity in a group

A moment of meditation is best implemented after playing outside or while you see the group getting restless. Sit in a large circle and encourage the children to lie down in their own space and listen to the music. Invite all the adults in the room to participate as well, so the children don't feel watched.
