Why is this activity important? It is important to create spaces and opportunities for children to be fully immersed in the present moment, to be focused and to calm the mind. During days, times, and situations of anxiety and uncertainty, it is particularly important to help children imagine new realities, express difficult emotions, and find joy and positivity. Drawing gives children a way to channel their emotions and allows their imaginations to run wild as they explore possibilities and create something that is truly theirs. Share this freedom and time to calm down peacefully by joining them. |
How to make:
FOR AGES 3-5 AND 5-8 YEARS:
1. Find a quiet space in the house to draw where there are no interruptions or noise. You can do it indoors or in an outdoor space like a garden or park so the kids can be in touch with nature.
2. Invite your child to create a drawing of whatever they want. Give them and you enough time to draw or paint. This is the free drawing. They can also look for elements of nature that they can use to create their art (twigs, leaves, mix earth with water to create paint, etc).
3. After you're done, spend some time together showing the drawings and talking about them. You could ask:
- What did you draw/paint? Why did you choose to draw this?
- How does this make you feel? Do you feel calm? Because?
- What do you think my drawing is about? I liked to draw with you because it made me feel.
May there always be space for these activities so that children learn to connect with themselves and calm down in difficult situations.
Tips on how to do this activity in a group Ensure the group has the time and space to freely draw with appropriate resources in a peaceful environment. You can create a 'Gallery' on your classroom or living room wall. Explain that a gallery is a place where drawings, paintings and other creations are placed for others to see and enjoy. Invite the kids to create artwork for the gallery whenever they want. Once they've finished drawing or painting, ask them to stick it on a wall. |
Tip Children love to draw, paint, model and learn to carry out these activities through their interaction with people and things in the place where they live. But it's important to know that each one will do it in their own time and in their own way. From a very young age, when they begin to explore and use objects, to imitate what people do with them, the child discovers that certain things leave a mark: whether the pencil on the paper or the stick in the earth. By repeating the gesture, the brand continues to appear and it enchants her, it seems magical! They are the first traits and they are important for the child, because they are their creation. With this she learns and develops, in addition to promoting a sense of calm and well being.
