Children enjoy spiritual rituals and practices such as prayers and religious ceremonies or rituals that celebrate the sanctity of family, friendship and community. Rituals allow children's spirituality to flourish as they provide the foundation upon which a child's spiritual development can grow and thrive, connecting them with a sense of purpose and belonging, as well as with others, nature and God. Rituals provide children with a routine, allowing them to feel safe, secure and predict what will happen. This allows them to build confidence and self-esteem.
What it says to your child: Our faith and spirituality are an important part of our lives. Through rituals, we connect to something outside of ourselves and strengthen our interconnectedness. Rituals provide security as they are predictable and familiar and help me grow up feeling confident and loved.
How you can do it: Celebrate your religious holidays and teach your child about their importance to you and your faith. Sing religious songs during the holidays. Plan birthdays and meals together. Have a set time during the day to pray together or to sit down and share something about your day. Wake your little one up gently in the morning with music every day or read a book to him while he falls asleep every night. Hug each other before you or your child leaves the house. There are many ways to customize your rituals!
For Younger Children: Nurture the loving, safe and secure attachment between you and your child by singing lullabies to help him sleep or gently massaging him to wake up. Say your prayer out loud for your child to hear and observe your faith rituals. Enjoy family time together at the same time every day or week and use that time to be close to each other.
