In some religious and spiritual traditions, music is part of a ritual that deepens connection with oneself, with others, and with God. Singing or playing a musical instrument is used as a source of strength, to show devotion and praise, and can be a way of relieving pain in difficult times. Music is an integral part of many religious communities because it brings community members together in a community service that strengthens a sense of belonging and purpose.
What it says to your child: You can express your faith through songs and music. Playing and listening to music can be a form of worship that brings you closer to yourself, others and God.
How you can do it: Play, sing and listen to religious music or songs with your child. Take them to a local religious music performance in your community and encourage them to move their bodies and sing along to the music. Talk about how the music makes them feel. Give them the opportunity to try out playing different instruments.
With Younger Children: In the early years of a child's life, they are experiencing and learning to navigate the world through their senses. Let them explore movement and sound by playing and listening to music. Have fun with them! Watch and follow the music too. When they fall asleep, sing a song to calm them down.
