Showing you care

Show by example what it means to care. It can be through simple actions and involvement in your community, or at home, talking about a situation that affects other people and communities and taking action to support those in need. Doing so showcases the role adults play in providing spaces to share with others and modeling behaviors such as compassion and care for others and nature.

What he says to his child: We all have the power and responsibility to take care of each other as well as animals and nature. We are in a way responsible for the lives and well-being of others and what we do or do not have an impact on these lives, both in the family and in society. We are not islands. We must learn to live together with one another and in solidarity.

How you can do this: Listen carefully to what someone is saying, act when you feel something is unfair, speak up, support and share with those in need, take care of the community you live in. If you see someone crying, sad or lonely, find ways to support them, listen to them and help them in any way you can.

With younger children: Encourage your child to do the same, according to their age and developmental ability, in school, preschool or day care with those they know. Ask them how we can care for others, including those in need, act together on their answers and in a sensitive way. Take care of plants, animals and your home. They are all part of our shared world.
