Throughout childhood, children learn about and experience the special traditions, events and holy days of their family's religious or spiritual tradition. Some undergo rites of passage ceremonies, celebrate religious festivals and rituals, learn religious teachings, wear special clothing, collect and give offerings, create symbolic gifts, and many others. The celebration of faith extends beyond prayer and meditation into actions that declare the deep reverence we have for God, the Divine, Transcendent or Supreme Reality. This celebration of faith can help children understand who they are, their sense of belonging and their purpose.
What this tells your child: Faith is an important part of our spiritual development and is part of what roots me in my sense of meaning and purpose. It shows that we are connected to something greater than ourselves. Celebrating our faith reminds us that we are cared for and gives us strength in times of trouble. A shared family ritual makes me feel like I belong and connects me more strongly to my faith and family.
How you can do this: Share important traditions from your religious or spiritual tradition with your child. Discuss stories from religious scriptures and the broader meaning of these stories to explore rituals around life events such as births, marriages, and the passing of loved ones. Sing religious songs and music, dance to the music together. Create symbolic gifts during your religion's major festivals and rituals, wear traditional clothing and play games together. Cook traditional foods together and share with your loved ones. Celebrate everything that defines the essence of your faith and explore the questions your child may have with an open heart and mind.
For Younger Children: In the early years of life, many religions hold special ceremonies that are rites of passage for children. Discuss the religious meaning behind these acts in a simple way and share your experiences as a child with them. Comfort your child with faith-based stories, songs, and songs at home.
