The Postpartum

The period right after delivery (postpartum) is called puerperium and lasts for around 40 days.

The mother can already shower and wash her hair on the same day of delivery.

After the baby is born, the woman experiences a vaginal discharge like her periods, which slowly decreases. It is important to maintain hygiene. If this discharge increases, has a bad smell, clots, or secretes pus, it is necessary to look for the health service, as it may be a sign of infection.

In the puerperium, the intestine usually slows down and accumulates gases. The mother must move, eat properly, and drink lots of fluids. The mother should not leave the hospital or maternity center if she has problems urinating or having a bowel movement. If she has not had the baby in a hospital or maternity center, it is necessary to go to the health service as soon as possible.

 

Leader, the mother should receive care in the health service in the period postpartum. The World Health Organization (OMS) recommends:

  • At least three appointments are recommended for every mother and newborn: 
    • on the 3rd day postpartum;
    • between 7 and 14 days after delivery;
    • six weeks after delivery.
  • If delivery was at home, the first contact with the health service should be as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hours after delivery.

The recommendation is 2 appointments up to 42 days after delivery.

There is also a recommendation for the use of iron and folic acid supplements up to 3 months after delivery. These are provided for free to the woman.
